LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Industrial Model

Plastic Recycling Plant

LEGO Plastic Recycling Plant that simulates shredding, washing, sorting and injection molding

An educational Plastic Recycling Plant

The LEGO Plastic Recycling Plant is a complex and massive LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 industrial model that I designed as final product of a course on LEGO MINDSTORMS design held at the University of Klagenfurt (Austria) in 2019. It's built using two LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Core sets 45544 and two LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Expansion sets 45560. The model simulates the complete plastic recycling process with four interconnected modules:

  1. feeding of plastic waste (represented by LEGO 2x4 bricks of 4 different colors),
  2. the process of shredding and washing plastic,
  3. sorting the bits according to the material (the various colors)
  4. production by injection molding (stacking two bricks) of a new product with the selected kind of plastic.

With this advanced EV3 project, you can experiment and have fun with a large and complex two-brick industrial plant. Students can be challenged to program it from scratch, and learn how to manage many inputs and outputs, and how to make two EV3 bricks communicate. Click the button below to get the building instructions and the programs.
